Eliza J.Enochs Kentaged 53 years, 8 months and 2 days, died at her home in Madison Twp. Sept.29, of an abscess.
Mrs. Kent came with her parents to Poweshiek County in 1851. Their little cabin built on the old Daniel Mayer place was the 1st house built in Madison Twp. by white settlers. Uncle Uriah Jones, who is now feeble, who was also 1 of the settlers of the county, says that Mrs. Kent cooked the 1st meal which he ate in Madison. She and her people were whole-souled and made all who came welcome and their latch string wasalways out for the puioneers. She has been a noble woman, a loving wife and a grand mother. She goes out of the world without an enemy. Mrs. Kent's maiden name was Eliza J. Enochs. She was the daughter of Joseph and Nancy Enochs. She was born in Pickaway County, Ohio, Jan. 28,1837, came to Iowa in 1850 and to Madison Twp. in 1851, and was married to Joseph Kent Oct.13,1853. They had 4 children by this union. She gave her heart to the Lord and her hand to the United Brethern Church in 1862. Her only brother and kinsfolk Joseph Enochs of McCracken, Kansas, was unable to be at the funeral. A very large number of friends attended the funeral services which were conducted at the home Tuesday by Rev.Dr.Busby and the remains were interred in Kents Cemetery. Every heart was touched and was sorrowful at the going out of so loved a neighbor and friend. The bereaved husband and children have the sympathy of all in their sad affliction. They desire to return thanks for the many kindnesses received during the illness of Mrs. Kent and the attention paid in arranging the funeral services.
