Walter A.Piper, 86, esteemed life long resident of Adair County passed away early Friday morning, Oct.13 during sleep, at his Richland Township farmstead. He had not been ill, had been especeially active in the days prior to his sudden and unexpected death, and had driven to Carroll, Iowa, the preceding day to see his son-in-law and daughter Mr.and Mrs.Clifford Noland.

Family and friends paid final respects to his memory at funeral services held in the Greenfield Methodist Church, at 2 o'clock, Monday, Oct.16,1961. Conducting the last rites were Rev.Oren Reger, a former pastor of the Penn Avenue Methodist Church where Mr.Piper was a member, assisted by Rev. Harold Schirm, the present pastor.

Musical selections were the same as were used at the last rites for hiis wife who passed away in April 1952: "Beyond The Sunset" "Sunrise Tomorrow" and "Abide With Me" sung by a male quartet, John BreDahl, R.D.Mayes, W.R.Piper and Floyd Wilmeth with Mrs. Donald Hogan playing organ accompaniments.

Nearby friends and neighbors attending the remains to the final resting place in the Greenfield Cemetery were with one exception those who performed a similar function at the final rites of the late Mrs.Piper. They were James Dwyer,Clarke Eddy,Delbert Hully, Lloyd Inlow, Albert Morrison and Warren Schwab.

In addition to the daughter and her husband in Carroll, those who feel his going most keenly are 3 grandchildren, 3 great-grandchildren, a brother Fred Piper of Huron,So.Dakota; a sister Mrs. Elvira Hastings of Billings, Montana; 3 sisters-in-law Mrs. Roy Kilpatrick of Des Moines; Mrs.Lloyd Piper and Mrs. Nellie Piper both of Greenfield, a brother-in-law F.W.Hoadley of Greenfield; and Rex Swanson, whom he considered as a near member of the family. (Rex worked on the farm for many years)
