Walter Noland, the son of Sylvester and Mary Noland was born in Hillsboro, Ohio, January 3,1873 and went on to his higher destiny, Friday morning, December 26 at 2 o'clock at the Adair County Memorial Hospital in Greenfield. His illness extended over the last 10 years.
He came to Iowa with his parents in a covered wagon in 1883. The family spent their first winter in Iowa at Prairie City in Jasper County. In the spring of 1884 they came to Adair County, where they made their home on a farm in Walnut Township.
Walter Noland and Clara M.Handley were married December 7,1898 and this month quietly observed their 60th wedding anniversary at their home here.
The early years of their married life was spent in farming. Leaving the farm they moved to their present home at S.E.Kent Street in Greenfield in 1913.
Mr.Noland was preceded in death by his father and mother, 4 brothers, 2 sisters and 1 great-grandchild.
Surviving are his wife, Clara, a son Clifford of Carroll, a brother Ellwood of Dayton, Ohio and a sister Sidney Abbott of Los Angeles, California. Also surviving are 3 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren.
Mr.Noland was a member of the Greenfield Presbyterian Church. When he first came to Greenfield he followed the carpenter trade. In later years, up until his health failed, he was in charge of the Water Department of the Greenfield Municipal Utilities.
A pioneer of Adair County, he saw the miracle of his development from the rolling, unfenced prairie to its present state of cultivation. The qualities of the pioneer were ingrained in his charcter. He retained the resourcefulness, the patience, the honesty and the ability to work hard and love it, which he had learned in his youth. These were the qualities of the early settlers who carved out their destiny in a new land. Within his lifetime he saw this great change come about and found it good.
