Cecil Irwin Parlee

Cecil Irwin, oldest son of William E. and Louie M Balentine Parlee was born in Cass County, Iowa, January 11, 1898 and passed away at the Lutheran Hospital in Des Moines, January 28, 1972 at 7:00 a.m. at the age of 74 years and 17 days.

His family moved to Adair County when he was three years old and he spent the remainder of his life in the county.

He was graduated from Greenfield High School in 1916. He served in the U. S. Army in World War I.

On August 2, 1920 he was united in marriage to Esther Herrick at the home of the bride's parents in Grand River Township. To this union three children were born; William, Robert and Mary.

They engaged in farming for many years until they moved to Greenfield in 1944. Cecil worked at many occupations, he was deputy assessor for 14 years before his retirement in 1963 and he continued to work on a part time basis for a few more years.

He was preceded in death by his parents and his brother Royce, who died in early childhood.

He is survived by his wife Esther, his sons William and wife Bettie, Des Moines; Robert and wife Betty Lou, Santa Rosa, California; and daughter Mary and husband Harold Roberts, Greenfield; his brother Raymond, Atlantic; nine grandchildren and a host of relatives.

Funeral service were held at the Bickford-Murray Funeral Home in Greenfield, Iowa. The Rev. Harland Grant officiated. The music was furnished by Mrs. Helen Bailey, organist and Carl Carlson, vocalist. The pallbearers were Kenneth Kirlin, Gilbert Weaver, Raymond Piper, Fred Skellenger, Roger Anderson and Malcolm Herrick. The floral committee consisted of Mr. and Mrs. R. W. Seley. Interment was at the Greenfield Cemetery, Greenfield, Iowa.
