John Parker Elliott, son of Kyer and Harriet McMullen Elliott, was born in Adair County, near Greenfield, September 1, 1878, and passed, away Sunday evening, November 25, 1962, at the Adair County Memorial Hospital in Greenfield, where he had been admitted for medical care and treatment the previous day. He had reached the age of 84 years, 2 months and 25 days.

John was one of a family of four children and received his education in the rural schools of Lee Township in Adair County. He was united in marriage to Miss Blanche Herrick, March 15, 1903, at the home of her parents, Reverend and Mrs. George T. Herrick, in Union Township. Three sons were born to this union, Drew, Orla and Audra.

They began housekeeping on a farm in Grand River Township, where, with the exception of four years spent in North Dakota, they continued to live until they moved to Greenfield in 1927 where he was employed by the Adair County Road Department. He continued in this work until he retired in January 1957. He then engaged in farming part time on a farm they purchased, south of Bridgewater. Due to his poor health, Mr. and Mrs. Elliott sold the farm in 1960 and purchased their present home in Fontanelle, where they have since made their home.

By his even tempered disposition and thoughtfulness and his consideration of his fellow workers, he was highly respected and made many life time friends. His home, wife, children and grandchildren were first in his life’s concern, but his feelings for his friends were most sincere and he was ever ready to help those in trouble or need. He had been in poor health for the past five years, but bore his suffering patiently until the end.

He was preceded in death by his parents, one sister, Sadie Elliott Richter, and one son Orla, who passed away on January 16, 1937.

He is survived by his devoted and faithful wife, who lovingly cared for him during his illness, his two sons, Drew and his wife, Elsie, of Sanborn, North Dakota; and Audra and his wife, Wilma of Valley City, North Dakota; Orla’s wife Velma Elliott, of Greenfield; one sister, Mrs. Edna Luers of Des Moines and one brother, George Elliott of Greenfield, 6 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren, nieces, nephews, numerous other relatives and friends.
