Jean A. Whetstone, 78, of Casey, Iowa, died on Wednesday, December 26, 2007, at Mercy Hospice in Johnston, Iowa.

Jean was born in Davenport, Iowa, to William N. and Mabel E. (Whitmer) Rorick on June 13, 1929. Her parents were from Wilton, Iowa, and she grew up in the Wilton area where she attended rural school. She graduated from Wilton Junction High School in 1946. Jean attended the University of Iowa where she graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in Home Economics Education in 1950.

She attended Iowa State University to earn her Masters degree. Jean then moved to Greenfield, Iowa, and began working as the Adair County Extension Home Economist for Iowa State University.

On June 13, 1955, she married Charles S. Whetstone in Iowa City, Iowa, at the Methodist Church. She joined Charles in his hometown of Casey, Iowa, where Charles farmed and raised livestock. They farmed together for 31 years before retiring in 1986.

She was a lifelong member of the Methodist Church. She was a devoted daughter to her parents, a sister to her husband's sisters, and a devoted wife and mother.

They raised four children together. Jean is survived by her children, Tom Whetstone of Wilton, Iowa; David Whetstone of Casey, Iowa; Julia Whetstone of West Des Moines, Iowa and Lee Whetstone of Casey, Iowa.

She was preceded in death by her parents; and husband, Charles on October 13, 1996.

The family wishes to express a deep appreciation to Dr. Rebecca Lachenmaier, who was always caring and supportive.

Visitation with the family present was held Friday, December 27, 2007, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Casey United Methodist Church in Casey, Iowa. Burial will be held in Dalmanutha Cemetery in Guthrie County, IA. A family graveside service is planned with Reverend Lynn Gardner officiating.

Hockenberry-Mullen Funeral Home in Casey is in charge of the arrangements.
