From the Adair County Free Press:
“Death of Mrs. Mary Welch - Mary Davis was born in the northeastern part of Iowa July 19, 1871 and died at her home in Greenfield, April 23, 1919 at the age of 47 years, 9 months and 4 days. Her parents moved to Adair County when she was three years old. This county has been her home for 44 years. She was married to Benj. F. Welch September 17, 1888 and to them were born six children. The oldest, a daughter and the youngest a son both died in infancy. *Arthur preceded his mother to the great beyond but a few weeks having died March 17. At the times of Arthur’s death his mother was very ill with flu. She had recovered sufficiently to be around the house when complications set in from which she could not rally and peacefully passed away at noon on late Wednesday. She leaves besides her husband, a daughter Mrs. Eula J. Wood of Greenfield, and two sons, Henry with the army of occupation in Germany and Eldon D at home, one grandson Howard Wood a father, tow sisters and six brothers. Her sister, Mrs. Fort of Stuart, was with her for several days before her death. Her father and five brothers were also present at the funeral service which was held in the home Friday at 2:30 conducted by her pastor, Rev. JE Matheny. Mrs. Welch united with ME Church twenty five years ago under the pastorate of Rev. WM Todd She has been a devout and faithful Christian, a kind and loving wife and mother. A good neighbor and friend. The relatives have the sympathy of the people of Greenfield and community.”

*Note from the submitter, Angie Jameson," Arthur was an older son. The boy who died as an infant was Floyd William Welch, I haven't been able to find a name for the baby girl. Ben and Mary's six children were 1. Baby Girl, 2. Ulla G., 3. Henry G., 4. Arthur, 5. Eldon D. and 6. Floyd William. Arthur died at age 21, just a few weeks before his mother died. The obit was frustratingly vague, but I had the impression that he died from pnuemonia or some other form an illness."
