Death of an Old Settler

One of the oldest settlers in this part of Iowa, Rev. J. B. McGinnis died at his residence in Jefferson township, April 21, 1890, aged 67 years last March.

Mr. McGinnis came to Adair county 26 years ago and hence was one of the oldest settlers in western Iowa. He was held in universal esteem by all who knew him. He leaves quite a family of grown up children who are highly respected by their neighbors. The funeral took place at his late residence and was conducted by the Masonic Fraternity of which order he was an honored member, belonging to the lodge in Stuart. A large concourse of friends and neighbors was also in attendance.

DEATH NOTICE OF JONATHAN B. McGINNIS OF ADAIR COUNTY IOWA IN APRIL 1890
"ANOTHER WATCHMAN FALLEN"

"Died at his residence in Adair County, Iowa, April 21, 1890, Rev. J. B. McGinnis, aged 67 years and 5 months. The deceased was born in Butler County, Ohio, November 25, 1822, and on August 11, 1842, was married to Miss Rebecca Cason in Montgomery County, Indiana. From there they moved to Madison County, Iowa and to Adair County, Iowa, in 1864 and have resided on the same farm ever since. There were born to them eight sons and four daughters, all of whom survive him but one son, who died in infancy.

Bro. McGinnis was converted and joined the Christian Church at the age of nineteen years and has been a member of that denomination ever since. He has been pastor of the Christian Church in Jefferson Township continuously for the past twenty-four years, as well as filling appointments in Adair and adjoining counties. He identifed at an early day in the history of the county with the Masons and has lived a consistent member of the society ever since, and was laid to rest under the rites of that ancient order by members of the Stuart Lodge, assisted by members of Greenfield Lodge, Rev. Mr. Burnham, of Redfield, preaching the funeral sermon.

The deceased was highly esteemed by all who knew him, and undoubtedly without an enemy, his daily walk of life being in accord with his profession. He died as only a Christian can, and in full possession of his mental facilities. A large concourse followed his remains to their final resting place - Wahtawah Cemetary*. GWB"
