Warren and Clara Schwab

Warren, son of Oscar and Hannah (McFee) Schwab, and Clara, daughter of Charles and Catherine (Cole) Garoutte, were married June 7, 1933, thus starting another generation on the Schwab family farm in the Penn Avenue community.

Warren, raised on the farm, was educated at a country school one mile west of their home until Richland Consolidated School was built, then he finished school there, graduating in 1925. Clara was born in Audubon County, and her family moved around a bit. She graduated from Menlo High School in 1924. She attended Normal Training School at Atlantic, off campus from Iowa State Teachers College, graduating in 1930. During her college years, she taught country school in Cass and Adair Counties.

Four children were born to this union: Sylvia, 1935; Carol, 1938; Gerald, 1943; and Catherine, 1946. All attended school at Richland Consolidated School. Sylvia and Carol both attended Commercial Extension in Omaha. Gerald and Cathrine graduated from Iowa State College.

Warren, like the generation before him, was a good steward of the land. He also had a couple of hobbies such as attending farm and household sales and attending fairs, county, state and world. Clara, in addition to being a homemaker, was a substitute teacher in Richland, Greenfield and Orient schools. She was very active in church especially UMW (WSCS) where she held local, district and state offices over the years, 4-H, and was extension home economist in 1965. She was also active in the Adair County Historical Society, organizing the country school visitations by local school classes, reconditioning furniture, preparing exhibits in the first museum located in Fontanelle and later in Greenfield.

Gerald Schwab purchased 160 acres of the farm in December 1973. Alan and Diane Carr, a grandson, purchased the original household and 40 acres in July 1987. At this time Warren and Clara retired to Greenfield. Warren passed away in December 1995 and Clara in June of 1999.
