Gerald Schwab is the son of Warren and Clara Schwab, joining two sister Sylvia and Carol and to be followed by a third sister, Cathy. Childhood was spent on the parental farm, which was a general livestock farm with a little bit of everything and lots of togetherness spent in the toils of caring for livestock and raising crops. School and church were important to the Schwab family with activities focused in the Richland Consolidated School system and the Penn Avenue Church.

Gerald graduated from Creston Community College in 1962. In September 1962 he enlisted in the U. S. Army, spending over two years in the Army in Germany. After discharge from the Army, Gerald returned to collegiate life at Iowa State University studying agricultural business. The next educational venue was Michigan State University followed by Purdue University where MS and PhD degrees were earned, respectively. Following graduation in 1974 he secured an appointment at Michigan State University in the Agricultural Economics Department where he continues his professional activity of teaching and studying management of farm business.

Gerald made a wise decision in 1969 with his marriage to Martha May Schultz who set up their first home in River Valley, Wisconsin, where Gerald was teaching at the university. To this union two sons were born, Matthew in 1976 and Scott in 1979, who joined Martha's daughter, Jodi. They raised their family in Michigan where they have a small cash crop farm. Both sons graduated from DePaul University and Jodi from Michigan State University. They have maintained an Iowa farm connection and appreciate the life style values exhibited by their relatives and friends in Iowa.
