Hezekiah B. Elliott was born December 15, 1846, in Terre Haute, Vigo County, Indiana, to George Elliott and Nancy Farmer. He was one of four children, having two brothers, John and Marshall Parker, and a sister, Delila. When Hezekiah was three years old, George and Nancy moved their family to Grove Township, Richland County Illinois, where Hezekiah lived until he was 29 years old. At the age of 19, Hezekiah enlisted in the Civil War with Com. C, 11th Regiment, Illinois Cavalry. After his discharge, he returned to Illinois. Both of his parents are buried in Pioneer Cemetery, West Swedona, Mercer County, Illinois.

On December 31, 1872, Kyer was united in marriage with Harriet Louise "Hattie" McMullen in Cambridge, Henry County, Illinois. She was born on March 11, 1853 in New Windsor, Mercer County, Illinois to Major and Elsie (Wilcox) McMullen.

Kyer and Hattie were the parents of six children;
Sadie J., born November 30, 1874; John Parker, born September 1, 1878; infant twins, born July 25, 1881, died at birth; Edna Pearl (Luers), born August 17, 1883; and George Wilbur, born October 2, 1889. Three years after Kyer and Hattie were married they moved to Adair County by covered wagon and settled on a farm in Grand River Township where Kyer and Hattie engaged in farming and stock raising until 1907. At that time Kyer and Hattie moved to Greenfield and his son John took over the farm.

Kyer passed away on May 2, 1917, and Hattie passed away on December 31, 1942. Both are buried in Greenfield Cemetery south of Greenfield, Iowa.

Note: Original copy gives Kyers' wife Nancy's maiden name as Parker. It was found out later that it was Farmer.
