Alan Lee Carr was born March 10, 1960, to Harold and Sylvia Carr in Creston, Iowa. Alan grew up on a farm in Richland Township, Adair County. He attended Iowa State University in Ames, Iowa, after high school graduation, with a degree in wildlife and fisheries biology. When yet in high school he met and later married Linda Diane Puscas. Diane was born to Jack and Kay Puscas in Denver, Colorado, on December 29, 1961. In the fall of 1967 her family moved to Adair County.

Alan and Diane both graduated from Orient-Macksburg High School. They were married on June 4, 1983, following Diane's graduation from Iowa Methodist School of Nursing. They lived in Orient Township, Adair County, Until 1987 when they moved to their current home in Richland Township. This is the farm which belonged to Alan's great-great-grandfather, Alexander Schwab.

They now have four children, Nichole, Amanda, Matthew and Nathaniel, who will make the sixth generation of children to live on this farm.
