In 1939 Gerald Herrick, son of Frank Herrick and Sylvia (Bateham) Herrick and Maxine Rice, daughter of Ray and Letha (Macy) Rice, were married, terminating a school teaching career and beginning a home building career.

After living in Jefferson Township about two years, the family purchased the farm in Section 17 of Grove Township, Adair County, where they continue to reside.

During the years spent on this farm, the family of four children―Randall, Leo, Stanley and Linda―have worked together through the addition of several tracts of land to the farm project. Gerald also spent time wiring farmsteads of the vicinity when rural electricity came to Adair County. He also took down the original house and farm buildings and rebuilt them and several other houses and buildings. All this, along with an expanded farm program, has kept the time well filled.
