History of the Freshman Class
The Freshman Class of '10 entered one hundred strong and, of course, it is needless to say, they were very green. Each one proudly held his diploma on high and thought there was nothing left for him to learn.
On entering Miss Moore's room, they were somewhat surprised to find that they must stay in such a small room and that they had no more freedome now than in the grades. They soon discovered their greenness, however, for none of them knew what was meant by 'periods." But when one of the boldest cautiously asked what a period might be and was told forty minutes, he answered carelessly: "Oh, I thought it was only thirty."
However, they had the right idea and started in a systematic way to organize their class. The officers of the class are:
President .........................Pressy Frank Vice-President .................Harold Nesbit Secretary .........................Vera Rock Treasurer .........................Parker Lichty |
The first thing they did was to put up their flag, and though the green and white pennant only stayed up a couple of hours, everybody knew the Freshman had put up a flag. They then organized girls' and boy's basketball temas and during the past season these teams have well represented the Freshman Class, playing the Cedar Falls second team, defeating East High several times, and the eighth graders. The boys' team consisted of:
Forwards ............ Frank and Bublitz Center .................Shirey Guards ................Hersch and Frehse The girls' team was made up as follows: Forwards ............Hopper and Mattern Centers ...............Walker and Fentiman Guards ................Ebert and Rock |
They have also organized a track team. There have been several social events during the year, given by the Freshman girls.
The Freshmen also manifested their patriotism by going to work with a will to sell tickets for the United Societies' Lecture Course, and with the money thus earned bought a handosme picture for the high school assembly room.
The progress of this class will be watched with interest during its climb to the jumping off place
