Mary Josin Van Metre
Died - Bro. Van Metre of The Tribune, received the sad news on Wednesday of last week, of the death of his mother, and at once left for Benton county to attend the funeral. The death of this aged lady was not unexpected as her health has been very poor for some time, and Bro. Van Metre has frequently been by her bedside during the past few months, adding the comfort of his presence to her declining days. The Vinton Eagle of last Friday contains the following notice of the deceased:
"Mrs. Josin Van Metre died at the residence of her son, H. C. Van Metre, in Union Township, on Monday, Nov. 18th, aged 83 years. Mrs. Van Metre and her husband were among the early settlers in Benton county, and she had a large circle of friends in Benton and adjoining counties, among whom she was much honored and respected. The deceased was the mother of a large number of sons who in the past thirty years have been prominent in the social and business circles of central Iowa and some of them bore a brave and distinguished part as soldiers in Union army in the war of 1861. Joseph E. Van Metre, her son, was captain of Co. H, 18th Reg't of Iowa volunteers, and was killed in the battle of Springfield Mission. The funeral of Mrs. Van Metre was held at the residence of Henry C. Van Metre on Thursday afternoon and was attended by a large concourse of friends and neighbors. Rev. Adam Helm, pastor of M. E. church at Blairstown, conducted the funeral srvices."
