Lyman Hawley Starks
Lyman Starks, one of the oldest of Vinton's citizens, died Tuesday night of cancer of the stomach. At the age of nineteen years he enlisted in Co. G, 5th Iowa, the first company that went from Vinton in 1861. Later he was transferred to Co. I, 5th Iowa Cavalry, and was mustered out in 1866. In after years he was captain of the Vinton artillery company and has since been known as Capt. Starks. Deceased was twice married and is survived by second wife, three sons and one daughter.
