Saturday, November 22, 1919, occurred the death of Mrs. Eliza J. Simms, at the home of her daughter, Mrs. B. V. McDonald, at Watkins, Iowa, where she has made her home the past two years.
The deceased, while not one of the first settlers of this community, came to Watkins in 1866, from Pennsylvania. She was born in Cross Creek Village, Penn., September 13, 1829, being at the time of her death, 90 years, 2 months and 9 days.
She' was married to Samuel S. Simms, January 3, 1847, and to this union were born ten children, four of whom preceded her in death.
She leaves to mourn her departure six children: Mrs. Buena Vista McDonald, of Watkins, Mrs. Mary Gingery, of Vinita, Oklahoma, Davis W., of Hillman, Minn., Mrs. Ella Johnson, of Chicago, and Wiley W., Ledyard, Iowa, also fifteen grandchildren and one brother, John De Brular, of Oxford, W. V.
She was a woman who had a constitution that was excelled by very few, being able to do her household duties up until the last two years. For the past 5 1/2 months she has been confined to her bed, but always looking on the bright side of life, and causing but little trouble for those who cared for her.
Her illness was borne with a sweet patience and cheerful hope that she might be permitted to live for the ones whom she loved and cherished.
Every assistance that could be ministered by kind and loving hands was given to her, but the Reaper came with his sickle keen and took this loved one from the earth.
Her husband preceded her in death June 21st, 1908.
Funeral services were held at the home of her daughter, Mrs. B. V. McDonald, Monday, November 24th at 1 p. m., conducted by Rev. C. S. Burnard of the M. E. church of Blairstown.
The music was furnished very acceptable by Miss Lydia Groff, Mrs. Bertha Shedenhelf and Will Kouba.
Interment was made in the Watkins cemetery.
