Alice Shomler of Shellsburg Dies

Shellsburg May 16-Miss Alice Shomler, lifelong resident of Shellsburg, died in a Cedar Rapids hospital Sunday morning after a lingering illness. she was born at Shellsburg Aug 22, 1876.
She is survived by three brothers Russell Shomler of Shellsburg Clarence of Idaho falls, Ida., Fred of Vinton, and a sister, Mrs. George Gunn of Cedar Rapids. Miss Shomler was a member of the Presbyterian church at shellsburg and White Lily chapter O.E. S.
Funeral services will be at Turner chapel, Cedar Rapids at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday afternoon. Burial will be in the Shellsburg cemetery...

F. Shomler of Shellsburg Dies at His Home
Shellsburg, Feb 5-Florence Shomler, 81 years old, pioneer Shellsburg merchant died last night at nine o'clock at his home here of old age complications. He had been ill since the last of December, but his condition was not considered serious until last Saturday. Services will be held sunday at 2:30 p.m. in the Federated church, with the Rev. L. W. Inman conductiong the rites. Burial will be in the Shellsburg cemetery. Masons will have charge of the services at the grave.
For 63 years Mr. Shomler had been identified with the business interest of this place. Upon locating here in 1869 he opened a harness shop. Since 1892 he had sold clothing and shoes in connection with his other business. He retired last month and turned the business over to his sons.
Florence Shomler was born Nov. 1, 1850 at Saxony, Germany. In 1857 he came to America with his father and lived at Grafton. Wis., until thirteen years old. He learned the harness trade at Milwaukee and came to Cedar Rapids, locating here soon after.
Mr. Shomler was married on March 23, 18776, to Lucretia Noe of Shellsburg who died July 4 1928. Since that time his son John and family have lived with him. Six children surving the father are: Clifford of Rockwell city, Ia., Florence of Glendale, Calif., Glen of Boscobel, Wis., Mrs. E. E. Wallace of Willmsburg, Ia., Mrs. Anderson Maxwell and John of Shellsburg; One daughter, Mrs. Mary Trego, died some years ago. Mr. Shomler had been a member of the I.O.O.F. and K.P. Lodges more than fifty years. He also was an active member of the Mason, Rebekahs and Eastern Stars.

Laura Ann Shomler
Vinton-Mrs. Fred Shomler, 81, who spent nearly all her life in Benton county, Sunday at the Vinton hospital; ill two years of old age complications; nee Laura Ann Jessup, to Mr. and Mrs. Daniel Jessup at La Porter City, Ind., Oct. 30, 1868; came to the Shellsburg community when nine years old with her parents; married to Fred Shomler at Vinton Oct. 16, 1895, and they farmed in the Shellsburg and Vinton areas until retiring here 32 years ago; leaves husband and one sister, Mrs. Clara Kennan, Long Beach, Cal.; funeral tentatively set for Wednesday at 2:30 p.m. in the Fry-Holland funeral home here; burial in Maplewood cemetery west of town.
