Old Settler Dies
Benjamin Phillips

Benjamin Philips, after many long months of suffering and confinement to his bed breathed his last at 5 p. m„ Sunday the 14th, at his residence in Shellsburg. A largely attended funeral which was observed in the M. E. church, sermon by Rev. N. A Morshon, assisted by Elders Clouse, of the Baptist, and Dunning, of the Presbyterian church, at 10 a. m. Tuesday. The deceased was born in Athens county, Ohio, 1822, came to Iowa in 1854 and settled on a farm in Eden township where he remained until in 1872 he moved to Shellsburg, making his home here since then.

Bessie L. Phillips

Bessie L. Phillips Bessie L. Phillips, 74, of Urbana, died in St. Luke's Hospital, Cedar Rapids, following a long illness on Sunday, May 20,2001. Services were held Thursday, May 24 at Murdoch Funeral Home, Center Point, by the Rev. Len Taylor of Urbana Christian Church. Burial was in Cox Cemetery, Urbana.

Survivors include her husband of 54 years, Donald; her children, Peggy (Dan) Poole of Charlotte, North Carolina, Rosemary Cross, Melvin Phillips, Barbara (Gary) Rick, Mark Phillips, all of Urbana, and Evalina(Arlyn) Sieck of Center Point; her mother, Gracie Van Fossen; eight grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; a brother, Leslie (Mary) Van Fossen of Vinton; and a sister, Ann "Ina" Slager ofBrandon.

She was preceded in death by her father, Asa; a son, Bill; and an infant sister, Idella Fern.

Bessie was born November 30, 1926 in rural Center Point, the daughter of Asa and Gracie Boyles Van Fossen. On November 22, 1946 she was united in marriage to Donald Phillips in Center Point. Bessie was a homemaker and a member of the Urbana Christian Church.

A memorial fund has been established in memory of Bessie.

Sarah L. Phillips Funeral Thursday
Sarah L. Phillips

Funeral services for Mrs. Sarah Louisa Phillips, who died Monday in Independence, will be conducted Thursday morning at 11 o'clock in the Shellsburg Federated Church by the Rev. Elmer Bryden. Burial will be in the Shellsburg Cemetery.

Mrs. Phillips was born August 17, 1852 in Indiana, a daughter of Abram and Sarah Brooks Bloomhuff. She was married in Indiana November 25, 1874 to George Phillips, and they came to Benton County to live in the Shellsburg Community. Mr. Phillips died in 1913. Surviving children include Mrs. Bertha Cue of Oelwein, Mrs. Etta Holmes of Shellsburg and C.E. Phillips of Clinton. Friends may call at the Fry-Holland funeral home...
