Joseph Meier, one of Ida Grove's most respected German citizens, died on Friday, July 31, 1908, at the home of his daughter, Mrs. C.H. Ohlsen.
Mr. Meier came to America in 1860* from Germany. He was born in Leitmar, West Phalen, Germany, on February 2, 1828, and came to this country when 32 years old, locating at Marion, Iowa, where he remained for 14 years, coming to northwest Iowa and settling in Sac county in 1875.
Mr. Meier was married in Germany to Miss Lena Baker on June 12, 1855, and to this union were born seven children, three boys and four girls, the oldest dying when 5 years of age. The surviving children who now mourn the loss of as kind and loving a father as ever lived are: Henry, living at Sterling, Okla.; Joseph of Aberdeen, S.D.; Mrs. Ben Schimmer of Danbury; Mrs. C. H. Ohlsen of Ida Grove; Mrs. Frank Huppe of Danbury; Mrs. Andrew Thoman of Norway, Iowa.
Mrs. Meier died on October 15, 1903, of heart trouble and the remains of Mr. Meier were taken to Norway, Iowa, Saturday, where they were interred by the side of the good woman who was for almost 50 years his loving helpmate. The funeral service was held at the Ohlsen home Saturday afternoon.
*They actually came to America in 1857.
{Submitter comment: Joseph and Lena Meier were the second settlers in Norway, Iowa. Joseph Meier was the first blacksmith. His shop was located where the present day convenience store now stands. They also farmed. After 14 years they moved to a farm in Sac county; Joseph and Lena then retired to Norway in 1891.}
