John W. Lincoln, Norway, Victim of Pearl Harbor Raid

NORWAY. - John W. Lincoln, 19, fireman first class in the U.S. navy, has been listed among those killed in action during the attack on Pearl Harbor, his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Abe W. Lincoln, were informed here Thursday.
In a telegram to the Lincolns, Rear Admiral Randall Jacobs, chief of the bureau of navigation, said: "After exhaustive search it has been found impossible to locate your son, John William Lincoln, fireman first class, U.S. navy, and he has therefore been officially declared to have lost his life in the service of his country as of Dec. 7, 1941. The department expresses to you its sincerest sympathy.".
Lincoln was a member of the crew of the battleship Arizona, sunk during the Japanese attack at Pearl Harbor.
Born in Dysart Feb. 23, 1922, he attended public school there and at Blairstown and Keystone before being graduated from Norway high school in 1939. Most of his summers were spent at Pelican lake in Minnesota at the cottage of his grandfather, William J. Hoebel, and his aunt, Mrs. Ida M. Hoebel. He acted as a professional guide during his last three summers there.
. He enlisted in the navy Oct. 8, 1940, and with the exception of a few weeks at Great Lakes and west coast training centers, spent all of his time in the service on a battleship. He had made all the advancements possible for him to make during his hitch in the navy.
Besides his parents, his grandfather and his aunt, he is survived by a sister, Mary, and a brother, Richard, both of Norway.
Memorial services will be held in the Norway Methodist church Sunday at 9:30 a.m.
