George Gillis
VINTON: George Gillis, age 62, died Tuesday, August 8, 2006, at his residence following an extended illness.
Graveside Services will be held at 10 AM, Saturday, August 12, 2006 at McBroom Cemetery near Shellsburg, with Graveside Military Rites conducted by AMVET Post 218 of Vinton. Phillips Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
George was born September 29, 1943 at St. Louis, MO to Wes and Laura Gillis. He attended Shellsburg Community School before joining the Military in 1959. After an honorable discharge in 1962, he drove semi-trucks for various trucking companies until he purchased his own rig. He was a member of AMVETS Post #218 in Vinton and an avid stock car racing fan.
He is survived by his sons, Joseph Chase, Sr. of NJ and Corey Croxell of Lawrence, KS, his daughters, Diane Jackson of PA, and Kim Hard of Center Point; his brother, Lou of Vinton; his sisters, Dorothy (Leonard) Armstrong of Atkins, Sherry (Frank) Ham of Eufaula, OK, and Arleen Garvin of Norwalk, VA; his girlfriend and caregiver, Jeannie Tarvin and several grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his brother, James Gillis and his sister, Norma Gould.
In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be sent to the American Cancer Society or AMVETS Post #218 of Vinton.

James W. Gillis
James W. Gillis, 47, of 2066 Riverview St. SE, died Saturday night, July 22, 1995, in University Hospitals, Iowa City, after a lengthy illness. Graveside services: 2 p.m. Tuesday, McBroom Cemetery, rural Shellsburg, by the Rev. Steven Rempfer. There will be no visitation. Phillips Funeral Home, Vinton, is in charge of arrangements.
Survivors include two sons, Eric of Iowa City and Scott of Cedar Rapids.
Also surviving are his former wife, Charlene Gillis; a daughter-in-law, Angie; and grandchildren, Nicole and Zachary Gillis.

Louis Porter Gillis
VINTON: Louis "Lou" Porter Gillis, age 55, was found at his residence on Tuesday, September 23, 2008. He had died following a sudden illness. Graveside Services will be held at 10:30 AM, Saturday, September 27, 2008 at McBroom Cemetery near Shellsburg with Graveside Services and Military Rites conducted by members of Geo. G. Luckey American Legion Post #57, AMVETS Post #218, and Smith-Geater VFW Post #8884 of Vinton. Phillips Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Lou was born February 25, 1953 at Vinton to Melvin and Laura (Marsh) Gillis and graduated from the Shellsburg High School in 1972. From 1974 to 1978 he served his Nation in the US Army and was stationed in Okinawa and Korea. Lou was a member of Geo. G. Luckey American Legion Post #57, AMVETS Post #218, and Smith-Geater VFW Post #8884 of Vinton.
Lou had been employed at Theisen-Klein Tools in Amana and he enjoyed auto racing.
He is survived by his sisters, Dorothy (Lenard) Armstrong of Atkins, and Sherry (Frank) Ham of Eufaula, OK.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his brothers, James and George, and his sisters, Norma Gould and Arlene Garvin.
