Vinton Eagle;
Mrs. Engledow Dead
Mary Ann Engledow (nee Saddenfield)

One of the Early Settlers of Cedar Township Passes Away

The La Porte City correspondent of the Waterloo Times-Tribune sends the following account to that paper of the death of one of the early pioneers of Cedar township

At the family home five miles southeast of La Porte City, in Benton county, Thursday evening at nine thirty o'clock occurred the death of Mrs. Mary Ann Engledow, one of Benton county's oldest settlers. Death is the result of a long suffering with tumor in the side near the stomach. Two years ago the deceased was attacked with great suffering in her side and since that time death has gradually tightened its hold upon her. About six weeks ago she became confined to her bed and gradually sank till death came as a welcome release from suffering

Mrs. Engledow was born in Indiana in 1828 making her now in her 78th year. She with her husband came to Benton county in 1855 and settled on the farm where she died

Mr. Engledow died in the same place six years ago last April. Since that time Mrs. Engledow has lived with her daughter, Amanda Pearsall, in the old home

Mrs. Engledow was the mother of four children, two sons and two daughters; of these, one son and both daughters were with their mother when death came. Dave the oldest son, died two years ago. The children are Amanda Pearsall who lived in the old home with her mother, Malinda Goodle (sic) of St. Louis, Mo., and Hiram Engledow of Spring Creek township

The funeral will be held Saturday, Dec. 9, at one o'clock from the home, burial taking place in the Engledow cemetery which was at one time part of the Engledow farm. Rev. F. N. Willis, pastor of the Methodist church in La Porte City will preach the funeral sermon.
