George Morten Dorsey

GEORGE MORTEN DORSEY OF OLD FAMILY IS DEAD

George Morten Dorsey, one of the first children born in Benton county, died at his home in Mt. Auburn Monday afternoon about 5 o'clock after a serious illness of some months. Mr. Dorsey was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Beal Dorsey, who were among the early settlers of Benton township, and was born there January 20, 1849. He was married at Vinton to Emma DeWalt September 29, 1872, and to them were born seven children. Franklin, who died when he was one year old. Lewis, who died at the age of thiry years, and the five children surviving him, who are Frank Dorsey of Memphis, Tennessee, Harry Dorsey fo Jacksonville, Florida, Garfield Dorsey of Ft. Worth, Texas, Charles Dorsey, who is now farming the home place near Mt. Auburn, and one daughter, Mrs. Roy Cameron of Vinton. His wife, the mother of the children named, died June 30th, 1888. Other members of the immediate family surviving him are his aged mother, who lives in Cedar Falls, three sisters, Mrs. Lucinda Robbins of Shellsburg, Mrs. Allie Seely of Vinton, Mrs. Melissa Mitchell of Cedar Falls, and four brothers, Samuel Dorsey of Salt Lake City, Utah, Jas. Dorsey of Seattle, Wash., Richard Dorsey of Shellsburg, and Charles Dorsey of Mt. Auburn. On March 27th, 1895,he was united in marriage with Sophia M. Williamson, who survives him. Mr. Dorsey was a member of the Odd Fellow lodge of Mt. Auburn.

The Dorsey family is one of the oldest in Benton county, and the history of Benton county speaks of Beal Dorsey, father of the deceased, in the following: "Among these was Beal Dorsey, a Kentucky farmer and stockraiser, who took land in section 31 during the fall of 1845. He proved his worth both as a farmer and a politician. In the late seventies he was the owner of a three hundred and fifty acre farm valued at ten thousand dollars which in those days would have fixed a man's standing among the prosperous, not to say wealthy farmers.

"When Mr. Dorsey came to Benton township in 1845, there was not a house in Vinton; in fact the site of that city was not surveyed until the following year. At that time there were also but four families in the neighborhood where he settled--a young man of twenty-two, possessed of about one hundred dollars in cash, a team of horses, an old dray, one plow, two cows, and five pigs. Mr. Dorsey was, of course, at the first election in Benton township held in John Pogue's cabin as, in order to hold an election of any kind it seemed absolutely necessary for every ambitious voter to be present; otherwise the offices to be filled might exceed the voting strength of the county."
