Lyle James Covington
Lyle James Covington, 76 of Cedar Rapids died Saturday October 4, 2008 in his sleep. Services 3 pm., Wednesday. Teahen Funeral Home, by the Rev. Clinton Jeffers of The Church at Covington. The American Legion Post 5 will hold military services. Burial will be at 3 pm Friday, at the Oakwood Cemetery, Shellsburg.
Survivors include his wife, Evelyn; two sons James (Vickie) Covington of Cedar Rapids and Jerry Covington of Vinton; two daughters; Debbie Covington of Rosenburg, Texas and Terri (Mark) Carter of Palo; Two sisters, Leah (Raymond) Miller of Mt. Auburn, and Betty (Floyd) Long of Cedar Rapids; three sisters-in-laws, Dorothy Sutton of Marion, Vivian Covington of Vinton, and Bonnie Crow of Cedar Rapids; nine grandchildren; three great grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
His parents, a brother Burl Covington, and a daughter, Denise, preceded him in death.
Lyle was born September 26, 1932 in Benton County, the son of Cecil and Mae Hoper Covington. He graduated in 1951 from Lincoln High School in Vinton. He married Evelyn Crow on August 11,1953 in Shellsburg. Lyle was drafted into the Army and served in Korea.
In 1960 he joined the Cedar Rapids Police Department attaining the rank of Sergeant before his health related retirement in 1962. Lyle and Evelyn then became foster parents to several teenagers and were a host family for many foreign exchange students. Lyle was a member of The Church of Covington, the American Legion Hanford Post 5, various bowling leagues, the Cedar Rapids Police Protective Association, the Iowa State Police Association Local 5 and a former elder of Cedar Christian Church.
He was involved with the Junior Police, as a Sunday school teacher, and as a frequent guest on the Dr. Max show as Officer Friendly.
