Elva was born January 13, 1921 in Canton Township, near Shellsburg to Porter and Della (Swallom) Gillis and attended Shellsburg High School. She married Ralph Kaut in 1937 in Vinton. The couple later divorced. On October 20, 1951, she married Dean R. Broxey in Shellsburg. Elva worked at Turner Microphone in Cedar Rapids during World War II. She worked for 34 years at Wilson & Company in Cedar Rapids from 1947 until retiring in 1981.
She is survived by two sons, Edward Kaut and wife Karen of Center Point, and Gary Kaut of Isanti, MN; one daughter Melva Kimbler of Seaford DE; eight grandchildren; eight great grandchildren; her sister Lola Thomas of Cedar Rapids and many nieces and nephews and cousins. Preceding her in death were her parents; her husbands Ralph and Dean; her granddaughter, Maureen Kaut; grandson Tim Kaut; one sister and six brothers.
