Heart Aliment Fatal to Amanda Bates
Amanda Bates
Mrs. J. M. (Amanda) Bates, 79, died this morning of a heart ailment at the Vinton hospital where she was taken last night. She had been ill three weeks.
Mrs. Bates was born Amanda Redington January 21, 1874 in Harrison Township near Vinton. She was a daughter of Benjamin F. and Margaret Redington. She married James Bates, December 2, 1893. He died July 23, 1933. She lived her entire life in the Vinton Community, moving to her present home five years ago.
Surviving are three sons; C.M. Bates, of Rock Island, Illinois; J.P. Bates of Southgate, Cal. and Glenn H. Bates of Vinton., eight grandchildren, six great grandchildren, and a sister Mrs. Mattie Conklin of Rock Rapids. Two brothers and two sisters preceding her in death.
The body is at the Fry-Holland funeral home. Funeral arrangements were pending.

DEATH REMOVES JAMES M. BATES, VINTON FARMER

James M. Bates, 68 years old, farmer north of Vinon, died Sunday at 3:30p.m. after an illness of two weeks with heart disease. Funeral rites will be held Wednesday afternoon at 2:30p.m. in the Bear Creek Church. Burial will be in the cemetery near the church. The Rev. W.W. Williams of Vinton will conduct the services.
James Bates was born November 10, 1864 at Fortess Monroe, Virginia. He came to this community when a young man and was married here December 2, 1894 to Miss Sarah Redington who survives him. He owned the farm which he had occupied since his marriage. There are three sons living, Charles, Jay and Glenn Bates, Mrs Addie Barber of Hornick, Iowa is a sister. Other relatives living incude eight half brothers and sisters.
