Van Meter Post 265 in Van Horne, Iowa


The Van Meter post was named in honor of Joseph Van Meter who was wounded at Springfield, MO on Jan. 8, 1863 and died of his wounds on Jan. 14, 1863 at age 22. He was buried at the National Cemetery in Springfield, MO in section 9, grave 12. He was from Vinton and was appointed Captain, June 4, 1862.

The post was chartered January 9, 1884. The post had 16 charter members and a total of 46 members. The post was disbanded December 15, 1896.
