Portrait and Biographical Album of Benton County, Iowa
Chicago: Chapman Brothers, 1887

SYLVANUS H. PETERS, member of the well-known and reliable firm of Mills & Peters, engaged in the livery business at Vinton, was born in Stark County, Ohio, Aug. 20, 1848. He is a son of George and Lydia A. (Marietta) Peters, the former a native of Pennsylvania, and the latter of Ohio. (See sketch of George Peters.)

In 1855, George and Lydia Peters determined to try their fortunes on the broad prairies of the new and more fertile West, and consequently came to this county when Sylvanus was but seven years of age, locating in Cedar Township. Our subject was raised on a farm, educated in the public schools, and remained at home until twenty-two years of age, rendering his parents what assistance he could in their new location. In the meantime, having been married, he moved to a farm of eighty acres that his father had given him in Cedar Township, where he lived from 1870 to 1883, when he sold out and moved to Vinton. At this place he engaged in the livery business, purchasing the interest of W. C. Marrietta, of the firm of Marrietta & Mills. In connection with D. W. Mills, he has carried on the business, under the firm name of Mills & Peters. The firm keeps seven full teams, two hearses, together with a sufficient number of carriages and cutters to accommodate its numerous patrons. In connection with the livery they run a feed-stable, which is largely patronized by the farmers of the county. Mr. Peters was married, Dec. 24, 1874, to Eliza A. Hazen, a native of New York, daughter of Charles Hazen. Both her parents survive and are living in Tama County, Iowa, near Belle Plaine. Besides being in the livery business Mr. Peters is the owner of 175 acres of land in Lyons County, Iowa, and is also the possessor of town lots in Sioux Falls and Wessington, Dak. In all the country there is no more ardent and consistent Republican, no man of better impulses and stricter integrity than Mr. Peters.
