DAVID PATTERSON, farmer, and proprietor of Iowa Valley Nursery, on section 9, Iowa Township, was born in Warren County, Ohio, June 2, 1832, and is the son of Thomas and Elizabeth (Ertel) Patterson. He was reared in his native State, and came to Benton County, Iowa, in December, 1855, entering the quarter-section on which he now resides at Government price. He was married, Sept. 24, 1857, to Miss Elvira Kennedy, daughter of James Kennedy. Mrs. Patterson was born in Sherburne, Chenango Co., N. Y. Eleven children were born of their union, three sons and eight daughters: James T., born June 3, 1859, married Anna B. Jackson, and resides on section 10, Iowa Township; Libbie J., born Sept. 24, 1861, died in childhood; Laura B., born June 16, 1863, died in childhood; Lucy R., born Jan. 6, 1865; Emma M., May 10, 1867; Charles E., March 27, 1869; John F., Aug. 2, 1871, Edith L., April 27, 1873; Elvira A., May 16, 1877; Olive B., Oct. 4, 1881; Clara A., Dec. 16, 1884.
Mr. Patterson has carried on the nursery business extensively for many years. For a few years he partially suspended work in that line, but is now starting in afresh, and intends to carry a full stock of fruit and forest trees, evergreens, vines, etc. He has 240 acres of apple orchard, twenty of it being on his farm in Nebraska. His last year's crop on the Nebraska orchard amounted to 900 bushels and the present year (1886) it will amount to over 1,000. Altogether Mr. Patterson owns 390 acres of land. Mr. Patterson is a Republican, with prohibition sympathies. Both he and his wife are members of the Methodist Episcopal Church.
