A[mos] W. APPLETON, a farmer of Eden Township, was born Sept. 9, 1854, in Decatur County, Ind., and is a son of William and Sarah (Gilchrist) Appleton, natives of Franklin County, Ind. The wife and mother died when our subject was six months old, and his father was again married, Margaret Gilchrist, cousin of his first wife, being the other contracting party. They came to Missouri some ten years ago, and five years later moved to Page County, in this State, where they at present reside.
A. W. Appleton remained at home until he attained his majority. He then returned to Indiana. and there worked by the month until his marriage, which took place May 17, 1882, the lady whom he chose as his companion for life being Miss Lena McCullough, born March 1, 1860, a native of Indiana, and daughter of William and Sarah McCullough, likewise natives of that State, where they still reside. After marriage, Mr. Appleton came to this county and located in Eden Township, where he is still living, engaged in agricultural pursuits. They have had three children — William C., born Feb. 13, 1883; Sarah I., July 8, 1884, and Almie M., May 18, 1886. Mr. Appleton is a highly respected citizen of the county; in politics he votes with the Democratic party. Mrs. Appleton is a member of the Christian Church.
