ANDREW SMITH, a retired farmer, now residing in Vinton, has a farm of 440 acres in Cedar Township, and forty acres in Black Hawk County. He was born in Wayne County, Ohio, Nov. 28, 1828, and is a son of James and Sarah (Eaken) Smith. His parents were natives of Pennsylvania, and of Scotch descent. Being descended from that sturdy race, the Scotch, he naturally looked about him for an opportunity of laying out means to accomplish the best ends, and consequently, when nineteen years of age, he went from Ohio to La Salle County, Ill., where he was engaged in farming. He was married in that county, Oct. 27, 1853, to Eunice C. Wheelock, born May 10, 1829, and a daughter of Henry and Lena (Ferry) Wheelock. Her mother was born near Mt. Holyoke, and her father in South Hadley, Mass. Her ancestors on her father's side were of Welsh descent, and on her mother's side of the early Puritans. Her maternal grandmother was identified with the Revolution, having one son in that war. Mrs. Smith was a teacher for many years, and came to Illinois in 1849, teaching school in La Salle County until they were married. She was one of the first teachers in that county; was there when the public schools were established, and drew the first public money for the payment of teachers at that place.
In the fall of 1874 Mr. Smith and wife moved to Cedar Township, where he engaged in farming until March, 1882, when he sold out and removed to Vinton. He bought his present farm soon after, but has never made his home upon it. Mr. and Mrs. Smith are members of the Presbyterian Church of Vinton. Mrs. S. is a woman of fine mind and of deep religious convictions. She has been a great student of the Holy Scriptures, and has some very original ideas and theories upon the subject of Bible interpretation, which she is capable of presenting in a clear and convincing manner.
