ANNESLEY W. BOGGS, a prominent farmer and stock-dealer, residing on section 27, Taylor Township, was born Jan. 15, 1823, in Gallia County, Ohio, and is a son of Samuel and Mary (James) Boggs. His father was a native of Virginia, and his mother of Maryland. The subject of our sketch was reared on a farm, remaining at home until twenty-three years of age, at which time he was married and started in life for himself, purchasing a farm in Sciota County, Ohio, where he remained seven years. In the fall of 1853, with his family, he started for Benton County, Iowa, making the entire journey in wagons and being about six weeks on the road. He stopped on section 22, near Mud Creek, in Taylor Township, where he built a small shanty and remained about one month, in the meantime building a house on section 34, where he bought 320 acres of land. He moved into his new house on the 24th day of November, 1853. On this farm he remained about twelve years, when he sold out and moved onto section 27, where he still resides. Though at the outset subjected to all the inconveniences and privations incident to pioneering in a new section of country, he has succeeded in clearing up a fine farm, and is now the owner of about 500 acres of well improved land, and is a most successful farmer. He deals quite extensively in stock, and makes a specialty of raising Short-horn cattle. On the 3d day of February, 1846. Mr. Boggs was united in marriage with Cornelia Chaffin, daughter of Shadrach and Sarah (Salladay) Chaffin. Our subject and wife are the parents of three children, all of whom were born in the State of Ohio: Alvin C., born Oct. 18, 1848, is a grocer, of the firm of Boggs & Conner, of Vinton; he married Ella Reynolds, and they have six sons. Cordelia, born Sept. 30, 1850, married William M. Traer, a grocer, in Burlington, Iowa; they have four children. William C., born Feb 2, 1853, married Mary Preston; he is a farmer and stock-raiser in Kansas.
Mr. and Mrs. Boggs are members of the Presbyterian Church of Vinton. Among the local offices held by Mr. B. are those of Township Trustee, School Director and Road Supervisor.
