J[acob] J. MOSNAT, attorney at law, and a resident of Belle Plaine since 1871, was born in Bohemia, Sept. 28, 1849. His parents, John J. and Catharine Mosnat, were also natives of Bohemia, who emigrated from their native country to America in 1852, bringing our subject with them. The family spent a short time in St. Louis, and then settled at Weston, Platte Co., Mo., where they resided until 1862, and then removed to Manitowoc County, Wis. In the fall of 1869 our subject came to Iowa, spent two years at Clinton, and then came to Belle Plaine, and after engaging one year in the mercantile business, commenced the study of law in the office of Tewksbury & Johnson, in this city. He subsequently took a regular course at the State University, and graduated in the law department in June, 1875. In July following he entered upon the practice of his profession at Belle Plaine, which he has maintained continuously since.Mr. Mosnat was united in marriage, at Manitowoc, Wis., Nov. 10, 1875, to Miss Julia E. Ricker, born at Manitowoc, March 3, 1855, and a daughter of Ezekiel and Amelia Ricker. They have two children — H. Roy, born Aug. 2, 1876, and Jacob L., Dec. 23, 1877.
Our subject has been identified with the Republican party since becoming of age. He served as City Solicitor in 1876, and for five years he was a member of the City Council of Belle Plaine; in March, 1886, he was again elected, and now fills that office. He has been successful in building up an extensive law business, and has won a place in the front ranks of the profession in Benton County. He has a knowledge of the German and Bohemian as well as the English languages, which has been greatly to his advantage in his practice.
