Jim Meyer (1864-1934) was born in a log cabin on a farm in Poweshiek Co., IA., where he grew up to young manhood. Then he moved to Lemars, IA for a few years where he learned the carpenter trade. He came to Newhall in 1898 and continued his trade, building many homes and farm buildings in the vicinity of Newhall, Atkins, and Vinton. One of the homesteads he built was on the Sparrenberger farm (now the site of Hope's Bridal Boutique) where he met his bride-to-be, Nancy Sparrenberger. They were married in 1899 and came to live in a home he had built in Newhall. He also built and maintained a carpenter shop on Main St. where he did the millwork for the homes he built. James took an active part in town council and was park commissioner for several years.
