From the library of Congress in Washington, D.C. this record comes: Summary of business transactions by grain and stock dealers in Watkins, IA from 1 Aug 1877 to 1 Aug 1878. George M. Danskin heads the list with 53,316 bushels.
G.G. Turner and George M. Danskin were among the best known pioneers and founders of the village of Watkins. Mr. Danskin built the first dwelling house and lot valued at $5,000 and the first store in Watkins. He was the first man to establish himself in business here, erected a large warehouse, established a lumberyard and dealt in grain. He was a station agent on the Chicago & NW Railroad Co.
In a farming community the elevator is an important part of it. Watkins had two for many years. One of the past operators was Danskin, who no doubt was the first.
