Manchester Girl Named Ensign in Navy Nurse Corps

Manchester, Ia. -- Miss Virginia Milroy, daughter of Mr. And Mrs. Norell J. Milroy, Manchester, has received her appointment in the navy nurse corps with an ensign rating, and has reported for duty at the Great Lakes naval training station in Illinois.

Miss Milroy attended St. Xavier's school here and graduated from the Manchester high school in 1939. She then took nurses training at the Mercy hospital school of nursing at Cedar Rapids, her course including a three months study in psychiatric nursing at St Bernard's hospital, Council Bluffs.

Following her graduation in 1942 she was employed at St. Mary's hospital at Watertown, Wis., and later at the People's hospital at Independence

Miss Milroy's older brother, Cpl. Morell J. Milroy, is now stationed with the armed forces at Shreveport, La. Her father is a veteran of World War I and saw service in France.

Manchester -- Mr. and Mrs. Morrell C. Milroy Thursday announced the marriage of their only daughter, Lt. (j.g.) Virginia Milroy, of the navy nurse corps, to Lt. James R. Murphy, son of John J. Murphy, Evanston, Ill.

The marriage took place July 10 in St Mary's church in Evanston. The bride graduated from Mercy hospital school of nursing, Cedar Rapids. She joined the government service in January, 1944. Lieutenant Murphy, a member of the marines corps, graduated from Northwestern university in 1942, and has served in the south Pacific war theater, during which he was wounded in the battle of Guadalcanal. Returning to the states, he was stationed at San Diego, Cal., until his transfer to the naval hospital in Crane, Ind., where he and his bride met. The home will be established at Evanston for the present.
