Mary H. Marshall

 

PROSPECTIVE WAVES -- Yesterday was the opening day of a three-day drive in Davenport by the navy to recruit enlistees for the WAVES and the SPARS. The office of the naval recruiting station was crowded all afternoon with prospective candidate for these two branches or service. Yeoman Ethelbelle Vessy is in the city from Des Moines heading the drive and is shown with three of her candidates. The young ladies are, left to right, Miss Mary Marshall, 3001 Fair avenue, who has completed her papers and will leave Saturday for Des Moines to take her physical; Miss Ella Jannan, East Moline and Miss Helen Zuber, 1825 West Fourth street. Miss Zuber is employed by Zoller Brewing Co., and expects to leave next week for her physical examination. The two navy recruiters are Frank Vereettt and N.O. Dalhun.

Mary H. Marshall, petty officer, third class, in the WAVES, is now on active duty in Miami, Fla., following a brief visit with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. M. R. Marshall of 3001 Fair avenue, Davenport.

Miss Marshall joined the WAVES last April. She received her basic training at Hunter college in New York and attended the storekeepers school in Milledgeville, Ga., as a seaman second class. She was graduated from there Aug. 9, receiving her promotion to petty officer, third class.

Prior to joining the WAVES, Miss Marshall was employed at the Rock Island arsenal.

Donald D. Marshall and Mary H. Marshall, son and daughter of Mr. and Mrs. M.R. Marshall, 3001 Fair avenue, are both serving in the U.S. navy. The former, a graduate of Davenport high school with the January class of this year, has completed his "boot" training at the naval air technical training center at Memphis, Tenn., and has been advanced to the rating of seaman, second class.

Mary H. Marshall, storekeeper second class, is serving with the navy relief division of Miami Fla., where she has been stationed since August, 1943. She received her training at Hunter college, New York, and Milledgeville, Ga., after beginning her service in April 1943. Her brother, who entered the navy Feb 12, has returned to Memphis for radio and gunnery school, after a leave spent with his parents.
