LuVerne Parents Have Two Sons and Two Daughters In Service

When Beulah Eggleston (left) and her sister, Doris (center) of LuVerne passed their physical examination at the WAVE-SPAR recruiting station in Des Moines last Thursday they made it four from the Eggleston family now in the navy. Ensign Elizabeth M. O'Brien is giving the girls the examination.

The girls are the daughters of Mr. and Mrs. G.A. Eggleston of LuVerne. Mr. Eggleston is the station agent for the Northwestern in that town and the family has resided there since 1936. They came from Iowa Falls. Alden, the elder son, is married and has been living in Rock Rapids. He joined the navy a year ago. Merle, the younger son, joined the navy in the fall of 1941. He is a graduate of the LuVerne high school, class of '38. Beulah, the older of the sisters, graduated from the Iowa Falls high school, while Doris is a member of the LuVerne class of '40. Four children in the navy, serving Uncle Sam, it surely is a fine record for the Egglestons.

Doris, at home on a 5 day leave, will return to U.S. Naval hospital staff, Great Lakes, Ill.

Sisters and former WAVES training at Northwestern Bell Telephone Co, are Beulah (left) and Doris Eggleston, 3926 Lincoln Place drive. The girls, whose home is Luverne, enlisted Mar. 4, 1943 and were released last November. Beulah, an aviation machinist mate second class, is learning to be a file clerk in the chief engineer's office.

Doris, pharmacist's mate second class, is a service representative, that is, a "trouble shooter" for customer's complaints, and takes - if not supplies - orders for new telephones and for transfers of service. Before Doris enlisted she worked in the Luverne postoffice. Beulah worked in a grocery there and had a brief whirl as a switchboard operator.

A man or woman veteran desiring "on the job" training makes written application to the veterans administration (VA), describing the preferred type of course. The employer asks the Iowa state department of public instruction for certification as a trainer. When the VA approves the veteran the the trainer, the veteran is eligible for substance allowance.
