3 Iowa Girls Among WAVES First Cooks

New York, N.Y. - The navy announced Sunday that the WAVES only school for cooks and bakers, at the "U.S.S. Hunter" in the Bronx had graduated its first class, including Cleo Mortensen, Spencer, Ia.; June Cox, Mason City, Ia.; and Evelyn Palmer, Nodaway, Ia.

ENLISTS IN WAVES -- Miss Goldie G. Cox, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. C.W. Cox, route 2, Mason City, left Tuesday for Hunter College, New York, to begin her boot training in the WAVES. Miss Cox plans to be a hospital corpsman. She is a graduate of the Mason City high school and had been employed in a munitions plant at Baraboo, Wis. Her sister, Miss June Cox, is a baker-2-c in the WAVES.

June Georgetta Cox was born June 12, 1923 to Charles Wesley and EmmaLena “Lena” E. Watson Cox. She died Apr. 1, 1977 and is buried in Memorial Park Cemetery, Mason City, IA.

June served in World War II with the U.S. Navy WAVES. June was married to Sven Patterson in 1946 and Verland Faught in 1972.
