Florence Classon Of the WAVES On Winning Team

WAVE Florence Classon, Storekeeper 2c, of Ellsworth, Iowa, is a member of the Camp Elliott (San Diego, Calif.) basketball team, which recently won the championship of the Eleventh Naval District Servicewomen’s League.

She was presented a miniature gold basketball by Lieut. Comdr. Edith P. Merritt, district director of women’s reserves, at a ceremony in the gymnasium at the WAVE barracks, Coronado, Calif.

Florence is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Raymond E. Classon of Ellsworth. She is a graduate of Ellsworth High School, and attended Capital City Commercial College in Des Moines. She enlisted in the Navy Women’s Reserve in February, 1944.

Florence Belle Classon was born May 27, 1920 to Raymond E. and Anna E. Olson Classon. She died Mar. 15, 1990 in Orlando, FL.

She served as a Storekeeper second class at Camp Elliott, CA during World War II.

She married Walter E. Nelson. They lived in Mansfield, OH before retiring to Orlando, FL. Walter also served in the Navy during World War II.
