Hornick Seaman One of First on Jap Soil

A coast guard manned LST, one of the first ships to land occupation forces in Japan, put these Iowa navy men and their detachment ashore in Tokyo Bay. The men are sitting in the Yokosuka Express troop truck, one of a number landed from the LST and used to take the detachment and supplies to the Yokosuka airport, near Tokyo, which the unit occupied three days prior to Japan’s formal surrender.

Richard Leonard Stoller was born Apr. 14, 1926 to Harry Joseph and Ida Laura Conn Stoller. He died Nov. 23, 1966 and is buried in Edwards Cemetery, Oakville, IA.

Richard served in World War II with the U.S. Navy.
