Lt. Lawrence Everett Murphy

 

 

 

Lawrence Everett Murphy was born Feb. 14, 1920 to J. P. and Agnes Murphy. He died Aug. 1, 1943 and is buried in Knoxville National Cemetery, Knoxville, TN with four of his crew members. He had first been buried at Ploesti and later at Neuville-En-Condrez, Belgium. The remains were returned to the U.S. in 1950.

Lt. Murphy served in World War II with the U.S. Army Air Corps as a Bomber Pilot from the 343rd Bomber Squadron, 98th Bomb Group and was KIA along with 7 of his crew on the Ploesti raid on Romanian oil refineries. He participated in 23 missions and received the Distinguished Flying Cross for the mission on which he was killed. He also received the Air Medal and three Oak Leaf clusters.
