Pvt. Wallace Eugene McCarty

 

 

Wallace Eugene McCarty was born Feb. 17, 1922 to Harry and Stella F. McCarty. He died May 16, 1942 and is buried in Oakland Cemetery, Russellville, Arkansas. He was initially buried in USAF Cemetery, Noumea, New Caledonia. He was returned to the U.S. in 1949.

Pvt. McCarty served in World War II with the U.S. Marine Corps, Gun Pointer 1st Class, assigned Marine Detachment USS Lexington (CV-2). He participated in combat operations on Marshall Islands, Wake Island, Solomon Islands and New Guinea prior to the Battle of Coral Sea. The Lexington was sunk during that battle. Wallace was wounded in action but taken off the ship and transferred to another ship that took him to New Caledonia where he died of his wounds.
