Daniel W. Lien was born on Thursday; December 4, 1924 in Ossian; Winneshiek County, Iowa. Daniel was the son of Jacob A.O. and Cornelia Mae (Wahl) Lien. He graduated from Decorah High School with the Class of 1942 and Luther College in 1949. He also pursued graduate studies at the University of Minnesota. Daniel was united in marriage with Sylvia Delores Nerlie on Saturday; February 6, 1954 in Decorah, Iowa. This union was blessed with one son, David Wayne. He worked as the office manager for Fred Carlson Co. in Decorah for 37 years. Daniel was a member of Decorah Lutheran Church, where he served as treasurer of the congregation during the building of the new sanctuary. He was an active member of the Decorah Quarterback Club and he kept statistics for Decorah High School and Luther College Sports with Ken Bjerke on KDEC Radio for many years. Daniel was a World War II Army Veteran. He enlisted on Monday; June 28, 1943 at Camp Dodge, Iowa and served with the 20th Armored Division, 27th Tank Battalion, Company D. He served at Camp Campbell, Kentucky; Camp Miles Standish, Massachusetts and the European Theater of Operation including Le Havre, France, Rouen France and the Central Europe Campaign including Munich, Germany and Salzburg, Austria. He was Honorably Discharge on Friday; February 12, 1946 at Camp Atterbury, Indiana. Daniel became a resident of the Barthell Eastern Star Nursing Home on May 29, 2007. Daniel W. Lien, age 82, of Decorah, Iowa passed away on Tuesday; June 12, 2007 at the Barthell Eastern Star Nursing Home in Decorah, Iowa. Those left to mourn his passing are: His wife of over 53 years: Sylvia of Decorah, Iowa. A son: David Lien and his wife: Lisa of Midland; Midland County, Michigan. Three grandchildren: Ben, Sam and Molly Lien. A brother: Jack Lien and his wife: Virginia of Wauwatosa; Milwaukee County, Wisconsin. A sister: Cornelia Waterfall of Norwich; Windsor County, Vermont. Also several nieces, nephews and a host of friends. He was preceded in death by his parents. May they rest in peace. Friends may call after 10:00 a.m. on Saturday; June 30, 2007 at the church. Memorial Services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday; June 30, 2007 at Decorah Lutheran Church by Reverend James Glesne, with private family inurnment at Springfield Lutheran Cemetery, rural Decorah. Full military honors will be accorded by Brockman-Hammersland American Legion Post 503 of Ossian.
