Sioux Cityan, Men from This Area, Win Bronze Star

Washington—The war department Tuesday announced award of the bronze star medal to five Iowans. They are:
Maj. Russell E. Mann, infantry, Iowa City; Sgt. Charles W. Hartigan, infantry, Cherokee; Pfc. Clifford Hanson, infantry, Holstein; Pfc. George E. Hinrickson, Mapleton and Pvt. Harry W. Heeren, infantry, Sioux City.

Charles William Hartigan was born Jan. 5, 1907 to Thomas William and Margaret L. Sheridan Hartigan. He died July 16, 1944 and is memorialized at the Tablets of the Missing, Normandy American Cemetery, Colleville-sur-Mer, France. He has a cenotaph in Mount Calvary Cemetery, Cherokee, IA.

Sgt. Hartigan served in World War II with the U.S. Army Co. B, 116th Infantry, 29th Division and died while serving his country in Saint Lo, France. He was awarded the Bronze Star with Oak Leaf Cluster and Purple Heart.
