SCHWEER AWARDED BRONZE STAR MEDAL

Pvt. John L. Schweer, 657 Sixth avenue, Council Bluffs, Iowa, has been awarded the Bronze Star for heroic achievement in action while serving with the 34th division on the 5th army front in Italy.

The route over which Schweer drove his ambulance, little more than a sunken one-way trail, was under enemy mortar and artillery fire. At an intersection known as “The Seven Corners” the enemy was throwing in an especially heavy concentration of artillery.

Two vehicles had been abandoned and effectively blocked the road. Schweer, without regard for his own life, removed the two abandoned vehicles and then drove his loaded
ambulance through the intersection and to an aid station where the wounded received badly needed treatment.

“Private Schweer’s outstanding courage and devotion to duty are deserving of much praise and are a credit to himself and the armed forces of the United States,” the citation with the award said.
