Dr. Neal Jongewaard and daughter Mrs. Herman Eppink drove to Sioux City on Friday evening to get Pvt. Herman Eppink who came home on a week’s furlough from Camp Wolters, Texas. He will leave again this week Friday and will report at Fort Ord, Calif.

Eppink Gets 3 Japs With Hand Grenade
Pvt. Herman Eppink of Sioux Center, son of Mr. and Mrs. John W. Eppink, killed three Japs in a hand grenade battle at Conical Peak. He sent greetings to his wife, the former Beth Jongewaard, and to his parents.
The above report appeared in the Des Moines Tribune of July 3rd, written by special correspondent from Okinawa.

Pictured here is Pfc. Herman Eppink, son of Mr. and Mrs. J. W. Eppink, who at present is in a rest area after seven weeks of combat on Okinawa. Herman left for the service on July 29, 1944 and was sent overseas in February going first to the Hawaiian Islands, then to the Marianas, and has now been on Okinawa for some time. He recently met Lubbert Neisink, Reuben De Groot from Rock Valley, and Marvin Grotenhuis, the latter taking him for an airplane ride. His wife the former Beth Jongewaard is staying with her parents, Dr. and Mrs. Neal Jongewaard while her husband is in the service.

There are a few more Sioux Centerites in Manila, Wilbur Huisman and I see each other often. Last Sunday Herman Eppink and Wilbur were both over and we had a good visit. We also went uptown, took pictures, etc.

Mrs. Herman Eppink received a cable from her husband on Saturday telling her that he was sailing from Manila that same day. He had been stationed at Manila for the past twenty months and will be discharged when he arrives in the states.
