Col. Nichols served in World War II with the U.S. Army 101st Airborne Division, 327th Glider Infantry and landed on Utah Beach, Normandy on D-Day. He was a battalion commander in the Battle of the Bulge in Bastogne, Belgium where he was awarded the Silver Star. During his military career he received the Bronze Star with Oak Leaf Cluster, The Legion of Merit, Belgian Fourragere, French Croix de Guerre, Dutch Orange Lanyard, and Chungmu Distinguished Military Service with Gold Star awarded by the Republic of Korea. During the Greek-Communist War, he served as an advisor and was awarded the Greek War Cross. He retired after 30 years of service.
