Petty Officer Carstens served in World War II with the U.S. Navy aboard the USS Franklin (CV-13) which was part of a force on a mission off the coast of Japan in support of the Okinawa operations. While aircraft were being launched, the ship was hit in a Japanese air attack. The explosions which followed started fires and spread destruction throughout the ship. He was MIA/KIA and awarded the Purple Heart.
